O'Neal to Break Ground on Donated Elevator at Shepherd's Gate

Greenville, SC – February 2, 2010 – O'Neal, Inc., a Greenville, SC-based integrated engineering and construction firm, will break ground on a new elevator at the Miracle Hill Shepherd's Gate shelter on February 2nd, 2010. The undertaking is part of a charitable effort to provide the outreach mission with much needed equipment necessary to better serve the needs of their clients.

Shepherd's Gate, an outreach of Miracle Hill Ministries, exists so that women on the verge of homelessness in the Greenville area have access to a safe haven in which their emotional and physical needs are met. While Shepherd's Gate has served hundreds of women annually for more than 15 years, it is not yet available to the neediest of women. Those who are temporarily disabled cannot be served because the facility's three separate floors require clients to travel between levels for sleeping, counseling, eating and to do laundry.

Minda Shelton, Director of Shepherd's Gate, has had the heartbreaking task of turning these women away. "For some women, walking up and down stairs can be dangerous," Shelton said. "We have had pregnant women living with us who underwent Cesarean section, leaving them unable to take the stairs while they recovered. Others have suffered broken legs or other temporary injuries that make them incapable of using the stairs. It truly hurts to tell these women that we cannot help them."

Miracle Hill's administrators say the donated elevator will change the way they serve this needy segment of our population. "This new addition would not be possible without O'Neal's donation of engineering, planning and construction services," said Reid Lehman, President/CEO for Miracle Hill Ministries. "O'Neal's generous leadership gift will have a transformative effect on the building and expand the shelter's long-term capabilities. What's more important is that their investment will equip the building to welcome and serve our community for years to come. We are so grateful for this partnership with O'Neal that is making possible this expansion of services."

"We realize the hardships created by the economic recession for so many," said Don Miller, O'Neal's Vice President of Construction. "Our hope is that through Miracle Hill, we can provide a hand up to those who have nowhere else to turn."

O'Neal's donation of design and construction management services, along with the contributions from other donors for the subcontractor and material costs totals more than $200,000 for the project.

About Miracle Hill Shepherd's Gate:
Shepherd's Gate became part of the Miracle Hill network of shelters on February 14, 1993. Women are part of the fastest growing group in the homeless population and come to shelters from some of the most dire situations: abuse, poverty, abandonment, and/or addiction. While at Shepherd's Gate, clients receive food, shelter, spiritual counseling, access to local human service agencies and educational opportunities. Also, because many are mothers, they receive support and instruction as they care for their children. For more information, visit www.miraclehill.com.
