Laser Scanning

O'Neal has developed 3D laser scanning tools to capture very detailed geometric information about a facility's existing condition.

Laser scanners use harmless light to collect over one million points of data per second to create true 3D surface models for a given project.  This allows us to scan even the largest and most complex facilities, inside and out.

O'Neal converts this surface data into 2D or 3D CAD plans using Revit or other Building Information Modeling (BIM) software for complete packages of as-built documentation, clash detection, and special analysis.  The models also help in evaluating alternative designs during the planning phase prior to construction.

3D Modeling

O'Neal employs the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to evaluate the design and construction of buildings, infrastructure, and utilities.  Through this process, information is turned into insight and value is delivered at every step.

BIM uses an intelligent 3D model to inform and communicate project decisions.  Design, visualization, simulation, and collaboration enabled by BIM provides greater clarity for the project team throughout the delivery process.

O'Neal's SCOPE Directional Estimating process utilizes a site and project assessment tool combined with our proprietary project database to collaborate with clients to create detailed 3D models, providing instant feedback regarding location, cost, layout, energy, life cycle, cut and fill, and scheduling.  With this tool, the owner and project team can visualize and analyze the project to make timely informed decisions.

O'Neal uses Plant Design Management System (PDMS) which allows multi-disciplinary teams to work concurrently to build a detailed 3D digital model of any facility, with each designer having a total view of what others are doing.  This geometry can be exported to external analysis packages.  

PDMS is particularly effective for complex process designs or in areas of limited space.

Accurate, full-color models can be easily accessed by designers, engineers, and project managers.  The ability to visualize the design brings enormous benefits in designer productivity and the overall design quality.  All project deliverables are generated from a single, intelligent model.

PDMS is a versatile 3D design system that provides greater overall efficiency in design through:

On the front end, O'Neal is leveraging the power of technology in a truly unique way.  O'Neal's SCOPE process utilizes an advanced site/project assessment tool, in collaboration with clients to create detailed 3D models, to provide instant feedback regarding location, cost, layout, energy, lifecycle, cut and fill, and scope.

With this macro BIM tool and our database of completed projects, O'Neal helps the owners and project team visualize and analyze the project to make informed decisions quickly.  During this flexible interaction, more options can be considered in less time.  We call this process Directional Estimating. O'Neal is customizing this technology for complex industrial projects, combining industry cost information with our own historical costs, giving clients a more accurate project estimate earlier than ever before.

On the construction side, O'Neal is utilizing advanced field management software like BIM 360, giving project managers the ability to assess and problem-solve in real time using iPads on the jobsite.  With direct links to original BIM models, all updates and modifications are instantly displayed so progress can be tracked.

O'Neal's field management software is also used to track materials and equipment through various stages of the construction process, adding an extra level of security.  Checklists and troubleshooting issues are all cataloged and fully accessible through the iPad, as well as shop drawings, plan sheets, and more.  Instead of regrouping around physical renderings, project managers can view the most updated information in one place, ensuring accountability among multiple partners.  Creating efficiencies in how projects move from the design phase to the construction phase has plenty of opportunities.

Protecting Intellectual Property

Many owners and general contractors may not understand that critical intellectual property (IP) is contained in the various drawing packages located in online plan rooms.  Intellectual property is further compromised when firms use low-cost design centers.

Owners may not initially realize their technologies and drawings are being outsourced to countries with little or no IP laws or protections, but not at O'Neal.

As this technology continues to proliferate and more of the owner's manufacturing- and process-related information is attached to the model, protection of the owner's intellectual property is something we will continue to take very seriously.  O'Neal develops a formal IP protection plan that is tailored specifically to each project very early in the planning phase.
